Although college is different for everyone, every student has the opportunity to achieve personal growth and academic success during their college years. One of the best ways you achieve this is by standing out in your classes. By implementing these strategies, you can differentiate yourself from your peers and make a lasting impression on professors.

Participate Actively

Participating actively in class can be intimidating especially if you are shy, but it will help demonstrate your interest and enthusiasm, setting you apart as an engaged learner.  Remember, participation is not limited to verbal interactions; you can also contribute through assignments, online forums, or group projects. Participation will also help demonstrate your critical thinking skills and your commitment to academic excellence.

Engage in Extracurricular Activities

Engaging in extra-curricular academic activities, such as attending guest lectures, can further expand your knowledge and demonstrate your commitment to personal growth beyond the classroom. Some colleges and universities also offer major-related honors societies and clubs that are great opportunities for expanding your network and participation beyond the classroom.

Preparation

Preparing before each class is another key strategy to standing out in class. Try to dedicate time to checking out the class syllabus and the class website for any readings and assignments.

By doing so, you'll have a solid foundation of knowledge to actively participate in discussions, ask informed questions, and stay on top of your deliverables.

Time Management

Time management is crucial! Take the time to create your class schedule and designate study hours. This will help you keep up to speed with the material and you will already be prepared when test season arrives. Creating a to-do list is another great way to manage your time. In this to-do list, write your assignments, upcoming readings, and other important deliverables. This disciplined approach will allow you to stay on top of your coursework, reduce stress levels, and ensure you are well-prepared for class.

Collaborative Engagement

You will find collaboration is key in every aspect of your life especially when you enter the workforce but you can begin collaborating in your classroom. Collaboration with classmates not only enriches your learning experience but also helps you stand out. Some ways you can collaborate is by engaging in group activities, such as study groups or projects, where you can showcase your teamwork skills, leadership abilities, and willingness to contribute to shared goals.

Seek Academic Support

College is hard and your coursework will get intense. Don’t hesitate to seek academic support when needed. Utilize your university’s resources such as tutoring services, writing centers, or professor's office hours. Seeking help demonstrates your dedication to understanding the subject deeply and your desire to do well in class.

Standing out as a college student requires a combination of active engagement, thorough preparation, participation in the classroom and extracurricular activities, collaboration, and a commitment to personal growth. By adopting these strategies, you can make a lasting impression on your professors, expand your knowledge, and enhance your overall college experience.
