This document includes definitions for each job function designed to help you understand what different roles do.



DATA

OPERATIONS

Data Collection and/or Management: Designing and/or
implementing processes to source, extract, clean and structure data from single or disparate sources in an organized reusable fashion.


Data Strategy: Creating a plan to leverage data in existing
workstreams, for the purpose of developing, supporting and/or
informing progress towards organizational goal (s).


Modeling and Forecasting: Using internal and external data
sources to make assumptions, build and inform statistical models to predict future behavior


Data analysis and/or visualization: Connecting, transforming and investigating sets of data for the purpose of identifying trends, uncovering insights, designing dashboards, charts or other visualizations to facilitate decision-making and inform strategy. 


Research and/or Evaluation: Collecting and analyzing qualitative and quantitative data to assess and measure the efficacy of a program or practice.

Process Design and Efficiency: Creating new and/or improving existing operations and systems for the purpose of increasing productivity.


Facilities and/or Vendor Management: Creating, planning, implementing and/or maintaining processes, including maintenance, facilities acquisitions, adherence to building and safety codes, continuity planning and capital improvements. Building and/or leading relationships with third-party service providers through contract negotiations, service delivery and general oversight. 


Scheduling and Logistics: Implementing, coordinating and/or managing activities, e.g. event planning and administrative support, in order to ensure the timely delivery of products and/or services.


Quality assurance and/or compliance: Establishing and/or overseeing activities to ensure the products or services delivered meet the established quality standard, and/or managing relationships, reporting and other activities that determine if a person, team or organization are operating in accordance with the regulations and guidelines established by its formal or informal governing bodies.

STRATEGY

PROJECT/ PROGRAM MANAGEMENT

Growth and/or investment strategy: Researching and developing an approach to organizational expansion or scale through investment, funding or restructuring Organizational.


Planning and Change: Designing and/or implementing an approach to minimize disruption, unanticipated side effects and to ensure that stakeholders successfully adopt organization-wide transitions.


Functional / team strategy development and implementation: Researching, developing and/or implementing an approach to achieving team or functional goals through the utilization of new and existing resources.

Project Management: Developing, executing and overseeing a plan for a team to meet a set of objectives within a certain timeframe and budget, by managing resources, stakeholders, scope, quality and risk.


Program Management / Coordination: Planning and/or coordinating the resources and activities required to support recurring programming, e.g. communication with program participants, executing program logistics. 


Program Design: Organizing resources to perform a series of repeated activities, or mini projects, towards the achievement of one or more broader organizational or business goal(s).

HUMAN CAPITAL/ HR 

FINANCE/ BUDGETING/ ACCOUNTING & BUDGETING 

Human Resource Systems: Implementing and managing the necessary infrastructure and process in service of talent operations like benefits, payroll, etc. 


Training, professional development, and/or leadership development: Ensuring staff develop the necessary abilities to excel in their roles and advance in the organization.


Workforce Planning / Talent Strategy: Designing an approach that positions the organization to attract, develop and retain highly effective staff across all levels and functions.


Recruitment / talent acquisition: Attracting, hiring and onboarding high quality talent.

Budgeting and/or Accounting: Comprehensive estimating, recording and monitoring of the financial transactions and anticipated needs for an organization, department or individual. 


Money Management: Advising, planning and/or implementing strategies to deploy financial resources on behalf of an individual, group or organization, including investment banking, private equity, sales & trading, etc. 

FUNDRAISING/ GRANT-WRITING 

MARKETING/ COMMUNICATIONS/ EXTERNAL RELATIONS 

Fundraising: Developing and/or executing strategies to source and secure funding, and manage funding relationships, for a particular goal or purpose.


Grant Writing / Management: Communicating with the funding team and finance team to understand grant needs, developing a grant budget, researching and/or writing grants and representing the organization with grant funders.


 

Public / Media Relations and / or Advertising: Establishing and managing the flow of communication between an organization and external or media outlets for the purpose of crafting and spreading that organization’s image, brand message, or products/programs.


Marketing Research and Analytics: Collecting and analyzing qualitative and quantitative data to assess and measure the efficacy of marketing practices for the purpose of developing, supporting, and/or informing progress towards organizational goal (s).


Digital Marketing and Outreach: Developing and delivering persuasive digital content and engaging in digital outreach, including email, blogs, and advertising, to spread the organization’s desired message and drive stakeholders to action. 


Sales, Business Development, and/or Partnership Development: Building connections and relationships with individuals and organizations across the sector for the purpose of achieving team or organizational goal (s), e.g. selling an organizational product/service, signing a beneficial partnership agreement.


Content Strategy and Development: Writing and editing persuasive content on behalf of an individual, team, or organization that is adapted to meet the interests of target audiences. 

Social Media: Managing the social media presence, e.g. Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, for an organization’s brand awareness, marketing, and/or community engagement goals.


Community / people organizing and / or advocacy: Engaging community members as a key lever for change through direct outreach, support, and community events. 

TECHNOLOGY / SYSTEMS

ACADEMICS

Coding: Creating, writing and updating computer programs, including website and application development, software and database engineering.


Technology planning, implementation, and support: Planning, leading, and / or implementing new or replacement system rollouts, multi-system integrations, technical support, or other technology related project work. 


Systems design and implementation: Defining and developing the architecture, components, and data for a system to satisfy specified requirements.


Infrastructure and Hardware: Leading or implementing technology hardware and / or infrastructure work. 

K-12 Teaching: Teaching a classroom of students in grades K-12 and having responsibilities for lesson planning, classroom management and assessments for a grade/subject/class.


Curriculum design: Creating and/or curating units, lessons, assignments and materials aligned to specific learning objectives and standards.


Instructional leadership / coaching: Guiding and supporting others, in an instructional environment, to build skill and mastery in the activities associated with teaching and learning, including lesson planning, instruction and pedagogy.


Higher ed administration or teaching: Teaching a classroom of students in a postsecondary learning environment and having responsibilities for lesson planning, classroom management and assessments for a grade/subject/class, or acting in a support role like advising, recruiting or financial aid.


Academic specialist: Teaching in a K-12 environment that requires a specialized skill set and / or delivering specialized services to a select group of students, e.g. ELL, SPED. 


School leadership: Leading and managing large portions of the day-to-day work in a school, e.g. discipline, instructional leadership, and providing oversight to more junior staff.

OTHER


Policy development / policy-making: Writing, designing, or influencing policies that impact clients or constituents at the national, state, or local levels, i.e. drafting the language for a city-wide policy, researching statewide policy impact, communicating with legislators about a certain policy, organizing rallies and speaking with the press in order to influence lawmakers 


Legal services: Providing direct or indirect legal services to clients such as researching applicable state and/or federal laws, writing informal or formal memos, filing documents, representing clients in court, or investigating legal matters.


Social services / social work: Providing direct or indirect social services to clients such as diagnosing and treating mental, behavioral or emotional issues, leading intakes or screenings, or connecting individuals with specific services
