SUMMARY:

This internship provides the opportunity to work as part of the Industrial Engineering team to help identify, develop and implement business process improvements for Amtrak’s Engineering Department. This will be done by examining industry best practices, benchmarking results and reviewing work practices, policies, procedures, data, budgets, agreements, work standards and other relevant documentation.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

•   Provide personal leadership in safety, reliability, and efficiency

•   Assist in the development of knowledge-based methods of improvement in the execution of infrastructure maintenance and capital replacement

•   Support the planning process for the construction, maintenance and repair of railroad infrastructure including Track, Structures, Communications and Signaling, Electric Traction and related facilities

•   Support projects to improve infrastructure reliability and determine the best use of personnel for safe, cost-efficient operations and maximum productivity

•   Assist in the evaluation of internal processes and controls and recommend enhancements to data retrieval, documentation and process flow

•   Assist in the development of business cases to ensure that major financial improvements and business process changes are supported with sound financial analysis to improve maintenance procedures and reduce whole-life cost of our assets

•   Provide analytical support for process-improvement projects including time studies, process documentation, process implementation and statistical data analysis

•   Assist in the development and adoption of the Maximo Asset Management system in support of data-driven decision making from field personnel to company leadership


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be actively pursuing a degree at an accredited educational institution
  • Must be actively pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in Engineering, Business, Finance, Mathematics, Public Administration or related analytical disciplines 
  • Must have at least 1 year of academic undergraduate studies completed or a sophomore status at minimum. 
  • Must have a cumulative GPA of 2.8 or higher
  • Must be able to work 32 hours minimum/40 hours minimum as a Co-Op

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

•   Proven leadership experience

•   Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

•   Excellent written and oral communication skills

•   Willingness to work in both office and field locations to obtain technical and operational experience

•   Demonstrated interest or competency in public transportation or the rail industry

•   Previous industry experience (internships, co-ops, professional)

•   Ability to successfully prioritize and plan projects


COMMUNICATION AND INTERPERSONAL SKILLS:

Must have excellent oral and written communication skills

 

The hourly range is $19.50 per hour – $22.10 per hour. Pay is based on factors including school year, program of study, etc. In addition, paid internships include Amtrak rail pass privileges as a part of the experience along with one (1) PTO day per academic year.
